The Boston Museum of Science - A Childhood
Wonderment
During my childhood years I have always loved the thrilling experience of visiting the Boston Museum
of science. A friend of my mother had worked as a science educator in various places at different parts of
the world. After working in many museums, she had settled finally at Boston Museum of
science.
This proved to be quite helpful for us as we could get to see all the events that were conducted
there including those whose tickets were a little hard to get. In some rare occasions we used to get the
opportunity to get a private behind-the-scenes look. I guess when you are visiting a museum; it surely helps
if you know someone who works there, though that name may not be the top most one in your list of
connections.
It is not that Boston Museum of Science displays anything which is not there at almost every Science
Museum, but it is their way of presentation which makes this museum my favourite. When I was a kid I used to
love watching IMAX movies as these movies used to transport me to a different world all
together.
I used to enjoy the enthralling experience of whisking over the waterfalls and through canyons or
rocketing up in a spaceship. Boston planetarium used to be another place which I used to love visiting from
time to time. I used to find the announcer there quite a funny person. I had seen in many science museums
that the planetarium is run by people who are not much friendly at all but the guy who manned the Boston
Museum of Science planetarium is a very nice guy. He used to get us laughing with his humorous
jokes.
I was completely impressed with the Boston Museum of Sciences Planetarium curator when I got to meet
him finally. To me it seemed that he knew about the solar system more than anyone else. Whenever I got the
rare opportunity to meet him in person a couple of times I used to enjoy learning about a lot of things from
him. I used to be always curious about the possibility of life on another planet and used to ask him about
it.
Now I realize that he must have been asked that same question innumerable times but he used to deal
with me with a lot of patience. I think that he was the first person who inspired me towards a career in
science, a career which I made my profession and followed entire life.
I would also suggest that before you visit the Boston Museum of science check out one the travelling
exhibits that they arrange from time to time. Apart from their host of diverse interesting displays they also
arrange for some temporary exhibits as well which are always worth checking
out.
Sometimes they arrange a show on local ecology or prepare a special program on the physics of
baseball particularly in a year when the Sox were doing very well. It is always fascinating to see a local
flavour and color being added to the regular and usual exhibits of a science
museum.
